INDOT Receives AASHTO President's Award for Implementing DamageWise Program

Each year, approximately 4,000 drivers damage infrastructure located along Indiana highways. This infrastructure includes guardrail, cable barriers, crash attenuators, lighting structures, signs, bridges, culverts, fences, traffic signals, pavement, and roadway drainage. INDOT deployed a state-wide crash damage tagging, management and invoicing system that associates crash-damaged infrastructure to a police crash report and seeks reimbursement. The DamageWise program was initiated by INDOT based on JTRP research recommendations from SPR-3411 "Recovering Full Repair Costs of INDOT Infrastructure Damaged by Motor Vehicle Crashes."
As a result of the INDOT DamageWise program, reimbursement for repairing infrastructure damaged by motor vehicles has more than doubled to more than $4 million per year. Also, the state's ability to collect on invoices has increased from 63 percent in FY 2010 to 85 percent in FY 2012. This impact resulted in an additional award presented on May 7, 2012 to fifteen INDOT employees (bottom photo). They received the 2012 Governor's Public Sector Achievement Award for implementing the JTRP research recommendations from SPR-3411.
