Physics of Failure based Reliability Estimation in Photovoltaic Systems

Residential roofing applications can satisfy >50% of residential electricity demand with 10% efficient PV technology (see NREL Estimate for PV Supply from Residential Roofingbelow). In addition to the quantified cost avoidance opportunities described above, there are a number of “soft” benefits for advocating distributive residential/commercial BIPV/BAPV systems. Consumer driven adoption of BIPV generates a conservation mindset among the public that one estimate indicates can lead to an increase in energy conservation on the order of 20%. Dow has developed a multi functional award winning Solar product, the DOW POWERHOUSE™ Shingle, that is aesthetic and easy to install, protects the home and generates energy. Developing this revolutionary product required fundamental physics of failure based methods to be developed and specific examples of the application of these methods will be discussed.

Narayan Ramesh is the Associate Research & Development Director for Dow Solar, with responsibilities for the development of the DOW POWERHOUSE™ Solar Shingle product, a breakthrough residential roofing solution that incorporates solar capabilities directly into a roofing shingle. Narayan leads the team that oversees the product’s overall innovation, including, reliability, safety, performance and installation. He is also responsible the next-generation of photovoltaic (PV) technologies, and leads the $23.5 MM DOE SunShotprogram that is aimed at the development of breakthrough approaches to achieve aggressive goals that will enable the widespread adoption of solar technologies.
