George Shultz, an economist and former secretary of state and labor, will visit Purdue on Tuesday (April 19) in the Presidential Lecture Series. He served in both President Richard M. Nixon's and President Ronald Reagan's administrations. As the semester nears its end, the calendar also features music, theatre, dance and more by Purdue students. Don't Miss It!

The Fine Arts Senior Show, one in a series of student exhibitions, will make the Rueff Galleries in Pao Hall look, well, fine. (The Photography Senior Show will be May 2-6.) Details

Purdue Theatre's Eurydice

Purdue Theatre's "Eurydice"

The Presidential Lecture Series will bring George Shultz, who has held four different U.S. Cabinet positions, to talk with President Mitch Daniels and the audience. 6:30 p.m. STEW, Fowler Hall. Details

APRIL 20-23

Purdue Theatre continues its production of "Eurydice," a contemporary reworking of an ancient Greek myth with themes of love, sacrifice and connection. All four evenings at 7:30 p.m. plus a Saturday matinee at 2:30 p.m. $. Details

APRIL 21

Purdue's 85th annual Literary Awards will welcome former U.S. poet laureate Robert Hass to a reception, a dinner at which he will speak, and a free public reading. $ for reception/dinner. Details

APRIL 23

The 59th Purdue Grand Prix will keep up the tradition of fun, learning, competition and scholarship fundraising. The venue opens at 8:30 a.m.; sprints start at 11:30 a.m.; feature race at 2:30 p.m. Grand Prix track, west of McCormick Road near Cherry Lane. No public parking at track; free shuttle 8 a.m.-6 p.m. with pickup at Ross-Ade Stadium, Stewarts Center and Wiley Dining Court. $. Details

The Purdue Jazz Band and the Glenn Miller Orchestra will combine to salute the great bandleader. 7 p.m. Long Center for the Performing Arts, 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette. $. Details

Phenomena is a well-chosen name for this awesome student-run musical show. 7:30 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Free.

Sports week. Baseball, softball and tennis are in full swing. Except on bunts and drop shots.
* Baseball steps out of conference to play Ball State at 6 p.m. April 19 and Indiana State at 6 p.m. April 20. Baseball
* Softball also has an in-state visitor, Butler, at 6 p.m. April 20. Softball
* Women's tennis meets Penn State at 2 p.m. April 22, then Ohio State at 2 p.m. April 24. Women's tennis
* Men's tennis aims to stay strong against Minnesota at 6 p.m. April 22 and Wisconsin at 10 a.m. April 24. Men's tennis

APRIL 26 and 28

Chamber Music Recital #1 and #2 will feature different programs but the same evocative, precise expression by Purdue ensembles. Both recitals are 7-8 p.m. in STEW, Fowler Hall. Details

Purdue Contemporary Dance Company

Purdue Contemporary Dance Company in "Spring Works"

"Spring Works" dance featuring Purdue faculty choreography and Purdue student performers will take the stage three times: 7:30 p.m. Friday, and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Pao Hall, Nancy T. Hansen Theatre. $. Details

APRIL 30

In a scholarship benefit performance, Chameleon, a '70s-80s rock band made up of Purdue jazz alumni, will return for an 8 p.m. concert that just might have the Lafayette Theater, 600 Main St., hopping enough to change the street number. General admission; doors open at 7 p.m. $. Details

MAY 1

Jazz on the Hill will feature all of Purdue's jazz bands celebrating great music and, hopefully, pleasant afternoon weather. 2:30 p.m. Slayter Center. Details

APRIL 25-MAY 22

Sports scene. As the weather warms, so does the activity in some sports.
* Softball takes on Indiana State at 6 p.m. April 27. After a road trip, it's three against Northwestern at 7 p.m. May 6, 1 p.m. May 7 and noon May 8 to wind up the regular season. $. Softball
* Baseball has a weekend with Ohio State at 6:30 p.m. April 29, 2 p.m. April 30 and 1 p.m. May 1. A road trip follows, then a big string of games to close the regular season: IPFW at 6:30 p.m. May 10; Minnesota at 7 p.m. May 13, 2 p.m. May 14, and 1 p.m. May 15; and finally "Let's play four" against Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m. May 19, 7 p.m. May 20, 2 p.m. May 21, and noon May 22. $. Purdue Galleries will open two exhibitions:
* "Pop! Goes Purdue" through June 11 at the Fountain Gallery, 330 Main St., Lafayette (with a reception at 5:30 p.m. May 13); hours are noon-7 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
* "Recent Acquisitions" through Aug. 12 at the Robert L. Ringel Gallery in Stewart Center (with a reception at 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. May 19); summer hours are noon-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and by appointment. Details

MAY 14

Spring Fling, Purdue's employee appreciation event for faculty, staff, graduate student staff, and retirees (BTW, not families, friends, or other students) will offer many familiar favorite foods, freebies and activities. MAY 28

The "All-American" Marching Band again will enliven the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade, which starts at noon at North and Pennsylvania and finish about 1:30 p.m. $ for seating; free for standing room. Details

MAY 29

The "All-American" Marching Band again will head the influx of bands at 8 a.m. on race day at the Indianapolis 500 and, as is traditional, will play "On the Banks of the Wabash" and other music. $. Race details
