Purdue president emeritus named 2013 Indiana Living Legend

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Dr. Steven Beering, Purdue University's ninth president, will be honored as an Indiana Living Legend by the Indiana Historical Society on July 19.
Beering is one of four people being honored at the annual Indiana Living Legends Gala at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in Indianapolis. The Indiana Historical Society is a private, nonprofit membership organization that annually honors extraordinary Hoosiers for their statewide and national accomplishments in a variety of areas and disciplines.
Beering served as Purdue's president from 1983 to 2000, and prior to his Purdue appointment, he served as dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine and director of the IU Medical Center.
During his administration, more than 20 new buildings were constructed on the West Lafayette campus, and 13 others were expanded or renovated. Beering also was instrumental in transforming the campus landscape and skyline with the bell tower and creation of several outdoor malls.
Beering has held senior positions with numerous national and state committees, boards of directors and educational policymaking groups. He is a past president of the Association of American Universities and was co-chairman of the NCAA Presidents' Commission Subcommittee on Gender Equity. He continues to serve as a member of the National Academy of Science/Institute of Medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Royal Society of Medicine.
A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, he subsequently graduated from the Pitt School of Medicine and spent more than 12 years in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps. During his military career, he served as an adviser to the U.S. surgeon general in internal medicine and was a medical consultant on the U.S. space program's early attempts to put humans in orbit.
The Indiana Historical Society maintains the nation's premier research library and archives on the history of Indiana and the Old Northwest and presents a unique set of visitor exhibitions called the Indiana Experience. The society also provides support and assistance to local museums and historical groups, publishes books and periodicals; sponsors teacher workshops; and provides youth, adult and family programming.
