Appointments, honors and activities

• Campus activities:

-  Purdue will hold the Sixth Summer Workshop on Spectroscopic Imaging on July 7-8 to present the most recent advances in spectroscopic imaging platforms, which could lead to innovative research tools and medical diagnostics. Talks will be given by experts from Purdue, Yale University, Harvard Medical School, the University of Arizona, the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Duke University and Northwestern University. A poster session will follow talks. The workshop also provides a platform for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty to learn about imaging technologies through lab training. Lab training will be provided by Ji-Xin Cheng, a professor in Purdue's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Chemistry, and his group. Faculty and staff honors:

- Jeffrey Evans, interim associate dean for undergraduate programs and director of learning innovation in the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, recently attended the 63rd annual National Security Forum at the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, at the invitation of the secretary of the Air Force. Evans was one of 160 civilian leaders in business, education and government who met with senior military leaders to explore current and future national security issues. - Three staff members in the Human Research Protection Program, Christa Blevins, Jill Wallace and lanthe "Cookie" Bryant-Gawthrop, are now Certified Institutional Review Board Professionals (CIP). CIP is a certification program for individuals working for institutional review boards. It is overseen by the Council for Certification of IRB Professionals and is an initiative of Public Responsibility in Medicine & Research. The Human Research Protection Program is responsible for ensuring that all human subjects research conducted by Purdue are conducted ethically and in a manner that promotes the protection of the subjects' rights and welfare.

Alumni honors:

- Katie Butler, a 2013 graduate of the Brian Lamb School of Communication in the College of Liberal Arts, was recently named Rookie of the Year by the Association for Accounting Marketing. The award is given to "a marketer on the rise, showing creativity, initiative and ambition within their firm." Butler is marketing coordinator for Weinstein Spira Certified Public Accountants & Business Advisors in Houston.

Student honors:

- Graduate students Emre Gencer, Kelly-Ann Dixon Hamil and Pamela Sari have received the 2016 Graduate School's Excellence in Teaching Award, the university's highest award in recognition of graduate student teachers. Graduate students were honored April 26 at the 18th Annual Celebration of Graduate Teaching Excellence, hosted by the Office of the Provost, Teaching Academy, Graduate School and Center for Instructional Excellence. Selected students must show excellence in mentoring and teaching undergraduate or graduate students, and have proven leadership and accomplishments outside of the classroom in service and outreach as well as scholarly presentations and publications.

Rankings:

- Purdue made the College Choice 50 Best LGBT Friendly Colleges and Universities 2016 list. College Choice, an online publication that offers resources to help students and families in their college search, compiled the ranking by taking a list of regionally accredited universities that are highly rated by Campus Pride, a website that rates the LGBTQ friendliness of colleges. Universities were then evaluated and ranked based on academic reputation, student satisfaction, affordability, average financial aid awarded and return on investment. Purdue's LGBTQ Center provides programming to engage the campus and community on LGBTQ issues.
