Indiana Academic Super Bowl at Purdue on Saturday

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The 30th annual Indiana Academic Super Bowl will once again hold the State Finals on May 7 in Loeb Playhouse with more than 700 students from across the state competing.

There are 99 schools represented in the competition, said Kyle Harrop, program director of the Department of Student Programs with the Indiana Association of School Principals.

He said this year's theme is "Hoosier Heritage" and is meant to celebrate Indiana's bicentennial. This year's Academic Super Bowl has been designated as an official Legacy Project by the Indiana Bicentennial Commission.

The super bowl consists of teams of up to three students who work cooperatively to answer multiple choice questions based on a study guide released in September 2015. Each question is read aloud and projected onto a screen. After a short 20- to 40-second consultation time, students' answers are graded. Teams with the most correct answers out of 25 questions in a round win. More difficult questions at the end of a round count in a tiebreaker system.

Separate awards and state finalists are determined in each of the six contest rounds in English, science, fine arts, social studies, math and an interdisciplinary round.

The contest is designed to be extra-curricular, covering topics that aren't usually in typical curriculum or covering topics in a different way than they would in most classes. Students do not use any class time to prepare for the contest, only after school and weekend meetings.

State champions are named in each of the four classes (determined by school enrollment) of each subject round. The state champions receive a team plaque, a banner to display at their school and $300.
