Appointments, honors and activities

Faculty and staff honors:

- Phillip C. Wankat, Clifton L. Lovell Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and Engineering Education, will receive the 2016 Warren K. Lewis Award for Chemical Engineering Education from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. The award, sponsored by ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Co., will be presented during the institute's 2016 annual meeting on Nov. 13 in San Francisco. Wankat has published nine books including a best-selling chemical engineering textbook on "separations." At least 34 schools have used his classic book "Teaching Engineering" as a textbook, and it remains the most widely used book on engineering education. His book, "The Effective, Efficient Professor," was extensively used as a resource in a National Science Foundation workshop for new faculty. He has received several research awards including the American Chemical Society Award in Separation Science and Technology. In 2004 he was instrumental in forming the School of Engineering Education. Since developing the world's first engineering education Ph.D. program, more than 40 engineering education doctoral students have graduated.

Alumni honors:

- The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation has selected alumna Kate Wooley-Brown to be an early-career high school mathematics and science teaching fellow in 2016. Wooley-Brown earned a Bachelor of Science from Purdue in 2008 and a Master of Arts in physics in 2012 from Harvard University. She teaches at Brookline High School in Brookline, Massachusetts. The Knowles Foundation supports early-career high school mathematics and science teachers through summer stipends, funds for professional development, grants for teaching materials, mentoring and support from experienced teachers and teacher educators, support for teacher leadership activities and membership in a community of more than 300 peers in 40 states.
