Parking, livestream info for Libertarian presidential candidate’s visit

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Motorists and pedestrians at Purdue can expect some traffic disruptions on Tuesday (Sept. 13) as Libertarian U.S. presidential candidate Gary Johnson visits campus to take part in a discussion led by university President Mitch Daniels.

The 5:30 p.m. event is in the France A. Córdova Recreational Sports Center and is co-sponsored by the student organization Young Americans for Liberty and the Purdue Institute for Civic Communication. The event is open to the public. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. for those registered in advance and at 5 p.m. for general admission. Spectators should enter through doors at the northwest corner.

Public event parking will be at Slayter Hill, 1209 W. Stadium Ave. The lot will open at 1 p.m. Additional limited parking is available at the sports center, 355 N. Martin Jischke Drive, and in McCutcheon Parking Garage, 250 McCutcheon Drive. Handicapped-accessible parking will be available just behind the center.

As of late Wednesday, more than 1,300 people had reserved a place for the event, which has a capacity of a little more than 1,800.

The event will be livestreamed at http://www.kaltura.com/tiny/ycpj2.

The university will be operating on a normal schedule, so campus parking is expected to be limited. Purdue police are urging anyone who can feasibly walk or ride CityBus to do so.

Recreational sports center users and intramural participants on Tuesday should make use of alternatives to the surface lot, such as the McCutcheon Parking Garage; parking enforcement in the Co-Rec area and at the McCutcheon Garage will be relaxed during the day.

Johnson, 63, is an entrepreneur and two-term New Mexico governor who is described as a fiscal conservative and social liberal.

The university has invited each of the presidential candidates that appear on Indiana’s ballot to visit campus. Johnson is the first to commit.
