Illiana Vegetable Growers Symposium set for Jan. 5

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - This year's Illiana Vegetable Growers Symposium will include sessions on new pollinator regulations, pumpkin and other cucurbit diseases, mineral nutrition for vegetable crops and an update on food safety regulations.

The symposium, a collaboration of the Purdue and University of Illinois Extension services, will be held 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (CST) Jan. 5 at Teibel's Restaurant, 1775 U.S. 41, Schererville.

"This is a great event to network with other growers and get the latest information on growing vegetables, updated control practices for insects, and which diseases to watch for in the upcoming season," said Nikky Witkowski, Purdue Extension educator in Lake County and one of the symposium organizers.

Presenters include specialists from the Purdue and University of Illinois Extension services. A representative from Lanes End Farm will share results from an on-farm trial using biochar.

This year, an additional session will be offered where participants can choose either a presentation on hydroponics or pest management in organic vegetable production.

Indiana private applicator recertification credits are available for a $10 fee. Indiana commercial pesticide applicator continuing certification hours and certified crop adviser continuing education units also are available.

Registration in advance costs $30 and should be postmarked by Dec. 16 or completed online by Dec. 22.  Participants can also register at the door for $35, but they will not be guaranteed lunch.

Registration is available online through Purdue's The Education Store at https://www.edustore.purdue.edu/wk_rules.asp?item_number=CW-CES-2 or by printing the registration form available at http://tinyurl.com/ivgs2017 and mailing it in.
