Registration underway for popular Purdue Citizens Police Academy program
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's police department is offering a free course that will allow the public to get a feel for what it is like to serve and protect.
The Citizens Police Academy, a six-week program that meets 5:30-8 p.m. once each week at the Purdue Police Department, will begin Feb. 16. The class will not meet the week of March 13-17 due to Purdue’s spring break.
Session topics and dates are as follow:
* Feb. 17. Introduction, overview, recognition and Purdue’s K-9 unit.
* Feb. 23. Emergency vehicle operations, traffic stops and driving under the influence.
* March 9. Firearms and instruction from detective Sgt. Matt Rosenbarger
* March 23. Building searches and active shooter response
* March 30. Graduation.
Purdue police Capt. Keene Red Elk said the academy has been one of the police department's more popular outreach programs since its inception in 2004. Sessions are participatory. Class size is limited to 25 individuals and will be selected through an application process.
