Young Ladies of Agriculture event to connect, inspire students

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Girls and young women in grades 9-12 who want to learn more about agricultural careers are invited to the Young Ladies of Agriculture Career Showcase Day sponsored by Purdue Extension.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. EDT on Feb. 9 at the Purdue University Beck Agricultural Center, located at the Agronomy Center for Research and Education, 4550 U.S. 52 W., West Lafayette.

The event will allow students to investigate college and career choices through workshops and a career fair. It is open to students with or without a background in agriculture. Participants will attend a career fair and choose from workshops in agricultural engineering, grain crops and horticulture, college and career preparation, and agricultural advocacy. There will also be networking opportunities.

“One of the most important things we want to accomplish through this event is to help young women become aware of career opportunities available to them through agriculture,” said Danielle Sands, Purdue Extension educator in Newton County. “The women are excited to share their experiences with the students, and in exchange, the students will be able to learn more about careers and interests that they may not have otherwise considered. We want to help them find their passion in agriculture and get them started on their future.”

Registration for the career day is $10 and includes breakfast and lunch. Each participant or group may bring one adult guest for free. Registration for additional adults is $10. Space is limited to the first 200 applicants. Registration forms are available to download at http://bit.ly/PurdueYLACareer and must be mailed to the Fountain County Extension office, 301 4th St., Covington by Jan. 25.
