Center for Animal Welfare Science to host annual symposium at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Researchers, veterinarians, students, and others interested in animal welfare science are invited to attend the third annual Center for Animal Welfare Science (CAWS) Symposium on May 18 at Purdue University. The symposium will be held in conjunction with several other events, including two workshops and the Canine Welfare Science Forum. Attendees can earn 4.25 to 5.25 continuing education credits for each of the events.

The symposium will feature lectures, discussions, networking and a poster session, all surrounding the theme of “Advancing Animal Welfare Science: Overcoming Obstacles to Implementation.” Organizers say it is a great way for industry professionals to connect with researchers, veterinarians and students to move the industry forward.

The symposium, which is 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., includes breakfast and lunch. Topics throughout the symposium will cover ethics, welfare education, misconceptions, food affordability, certification benefits, marketplace considerations, public perceptions and policy decisions. Experts from top universities and organizations will lead the lectures and discussions.

As a precursor to the symposium, two half-day workshops will be offered on May 17. Topics for the workshops are “Integrating Animal Welfare into the Animal Science and Veterinary Curriculum” and “Food Safety, Economics, and the Humane Food Movement.” The workshops are free and open to the public, but registration is required.

The second annual Canine Welfare Science Forum also will return on May 19 in  Purdue’s Stewart Center to address the care, welfare and societal issues associated with dog breeding. This one-day program will include topics such as dietary management, long-term effects of early environments on behavior and welfare of dogs and a panel discussion on the advancements and challenges in breeding dog health and welfare.
