The latest in genomics research highlighted at inaugural Biochemical Horizons Symposium

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Leading researchers in systems biology, genomics and genetic engineering will be among the speakers at Purdue University’s inaugural Biochemical Horizons Symposium, which will provide a forum for attendees to hear about new insights and research findings that are challenging paradigms.

The symposium, which is scheduled for Nov. 17, 2017, will begin with keynote speaker, J. Michael Cherry, Ph.D., a Purdue alumnus and professor of genetics at Stanford University. Cherry will talk about “Integrating Scientific Results and Knowledge for the Common Good.” After graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Purdue, earned his doctorate at University of California, Berkeley, and conducted postdoctoral training at Harvard University.

Cherry’s research currently involves the collection and standardization of experimental results and the detailed descriptions of these data into complex biological models, application of flexible search and retrieval tools, distribution of the integrated information essential for investigation as well as scientific education

Other speakers include Brenda J. Andrews, Ph.D., C.C., FRSC, of the University of Toronto, who will speak about “Genetic Networks Map a Functional Wiring Diagram of the Cell”; Margaret (Peggy) Goodell, Ph.D., of the Baylor College of Medicine, who will talk on “Epigenetic Regulation of Normal and Malignant Hematopoiesis”; and Gregory Stephanopoulos, Ph.D., of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; who will speak on “Genetic Networks Map a Functional Wiring Diagram of the Cell.”

This symposium incorporates the Department of Biochemistry’s current David W. Beach and Bernard Axelrod endowed lecture series. It also will include a poster session by graduate students and postdoctoral associates, who will use it as an opportunity to highlight research at Purdue.

Registration for the symposium opens on August 1, 2017. Further details will be announced closer to the event. For more information, visit the symposium website here
