Week set aside to recognize student employees

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The National Student Employment Association (NSEA) and Student Employment Services in Purdue’s Division of Financial Aid, along with universities across the country, encourage both campus and community employers to recognize the importance of the student work experience and say “Thank You” to their student employees during National Student Employment Week, April 9-15.

Student employment helps prepare students for the post-graduation job market by providing opportunities to develop relevant job skills that can enhance their career possibilities.

“Today’s student employees are reliable individuals with a strong mix of classroom experiences and job skills who often use their earnings to offset their college expenses,” said David Reseigh, assistant director of outreach services in Purdue’s Division of Financial Aid. “It is important to acknowledge the important role that our student employees play and to recognize them for their efforts during this week.”

Purdue offers a variety of programs such as federal work study, co-operative education and internship opportunities to bring student workers and employers together.

“Both campus employers and local non-profit agencies can benefit from hiring Federal Work-Study eligible students, as the government subsidizes the student's wage, sometimes up to 100 percent for some specific job programs,” Reseigh said.
