INDY International Wine Competition attracts wine experts from across the country

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Wine Grape Team will host the 27th annual INDY International Wine Competition June 6-7 in the Purdue Memorial Union ballrooms.

Each year, the competition draws nearly 2,000 wine entries, commercial and amateur, from around the world. This year’s panel of judges includes dozens of representatives from vineyards and wineries across the country.

Indiana is home to more than 100 wineries and contributes over $70 million to the state’s economy. The state ranks in the top 20 wine-producing states nationally.

The Purdue Wine Grape Team is made up of faculty and staff from the Purdue departments of Food Science and Horticulture and Landscape Architecture. The annual INDY International Wine Competition is a central component of the team’s mission to promote Indiana wines globally, said Christian Butzke, Purdue professor of food science and member of the Wine Grape Team.

“We’ve seen remarkable growth in the number and quality of Indiana wines over the past several years,” Butzke said. “The INDY International Wine Competition provides a global stage to highlight our outstanding wines and wine producers.”

In addition to industry professionals and experts, the competition attracts wine writers, chefs, distributors and sommeliers. Wines can receive one of four distinctions at the competition: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Double Gold. The medals are highly regarded by consumers and wine writers, a reason why so many flock to the competition, Butzke said.

The deadline for entries is June 1. For me information, or to sign up for the competition, go to http://www.indyinternational.org/
