What types of legal issues are covered?

Services include landlord/tenant disputes, criminal issues, power of attorney, traffic tickets, garnishment and collection matters, notary services, family law issues, name change, city or county ordinance violations, and small claims.

What types of legal issues are NOT covered?

Intellectual property law (patent/copyright/trademark/licensing), drafting of wills, trusts, living wills and medical directives, tax law, formation of for-profit business organizations and associations, real estate law, personal injury matters, immigration law, employment law, and laws of other non-Indiana jurisdictions are all issues beyond the scope of services at SLS.  In addition, we do not advise student groups, including fraternities and sororities.  However, we may still be able to refer you to other attorneys with these areas of expertise.

Is there ever a conflict of interest?

Yes. When the adverse party in the matter is a Purdue student, student organization or otherwise affiliated with Purdue University, the rules of professional ethics prohibit SLS from advising either party in the matter. At your initial consultation, the SLS attorney will determine the potential conflict of interest and will discuss referral.

How do I make an appointment?

First fill out an intake form, available on our website. Our office will then contact you within two to three business days to schedule an appointment.

No walk-ins are accepted, and no legal advice can be given over the phone or via email.

Bring all pertinent documentation to your appointment so the SLS attorney can better assist you.

Who qualifies for SLS?

All undergraduate, graduate and professional students of Purdue University qualify for services. No advice can be given to Purdue faculty, staff, alumni or relatives of Purdue students.

Can my parents speak with SLS on my behalf?

Purdue students are our clients, so SLS staff can only discuss a student's case with his or her parents if the student has given SLS permission in writing. Permission would constitute a waiver of the attorney-client privilege.

Will SLS represent me in court?

No, SLS will not represent you in court. However, SLS will give you information to prepare you before you go to court should you choose to represent yourself. If you need an attorney to appear in court for you, SLS will refer you to local attorneys.

What is the cost for SLS?

Where do I go to meet with the SLS attorney?

Our office is located in Helen B. Schleman Hall, Room 207. When you arrive for your appointment, please check in with the staff at the front desk.

What else does SLS do?

SLS is available to give presentations to your student group or organization about Indiana criminal law or other topics like "What to think about before signing a lease."
