April 24, 2003 12 to earn honorary degrees from PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University will award 12 honorary doctoral degrees during May commencement ceremonies. Ten honorees will be recognized at Purdue's West Lafayette campus during four commencement ceremonies on May 17 and 18 in Elliott Hall of Music. Two regional campus honorees will be recognized: one May 11 at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis' commencement ceremony and the other May 14 at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne's ceremony. The 2003 recipients at the West Lafayette campus are: Martin M. "John" Atalla, Atherton, Calif., founder of TriStrata and chairman of A4 Systems. His doctor of engineering degree will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17. Gilbert S. Banker, Iowa City, Iowa, and Naples, Fla., former dean of the College of Pharmacy and Distinguished Professor of Drug Delivery at the University of Iowa. His doctor of science degree will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 18. Evan Bayh, Indianapolis and Washington, D.C., U.S. senator and former two-term governor of Indiana. His doctor of management degree will be awarded at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 18. Donald V. Fites, Peoria, Ill., former chairman and chief executive officer of Caterpillar Inc. His doctor of agriculture degree will be awarded at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17. A. Bruce Maunder, Lubbock, Texas, former senior vice president of Dekalb Genetics Inc. His doctor of agriculture degree will be awarded at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17. Allison R. Schleicher III, Napa, Calif., former assistant group executive of IBM Sales and Distribution Group. His doctor of management degree will be awarded at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 18. John R. Seffrin, Atlanta, chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society. His doctor of social sciences degree will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 18. Stuart A. Solin, St. Louis, Charles M. Hohenberg Professor of Experimental Physics in the College of Arts & Sciences at Washington University. His doctor of science degree will be awarded at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17. Joel S. Spira, Coopersburg, Pa., chairman and chief executive officer of Lutron Electronics. His doctor of engineering degree will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17. Charles E. Taylor, Gainesville, Fla., professor emeritus of engineering science at the University of Florida. His doctor of engineering degree will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17. At Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis: Katsutoshi Yoshizato, Japan, professor of the faculty of science at Hiroshima University. His doctor science degree will be awarded at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 11. At Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne: William J. Hefner, Fort Wayne, Ind., retired businessman and lifelong community champion in northeastern Indiana. His doctor of humane letters degree will be awarded at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14.
