Purdue engineer meets with China's premier

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —A Purdue University industrial engineering professor met with China's premier to discuss the role of industrial engineering in furthering the economic revitalization of China and also received a special award from the Chinese government.

Gavriel Salvendy, a professor in Purdue's School of Industrial Engineering and also dean of the Tsinghua University Department of Industrial Engineering in Beijing, China, met with China Premier Wen Jiabao in the Great Hall of the People at Tiananmen Square.

Following the meeting, Salvendy received the 2006 Chinese Friendship Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Chinese government on a foreign expert. The award was given in conjunction with the 57th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.

"I'm very honored to receive this award and appreciate the opportunity to work with Tsinghua University's Department of Industrial Engineering during the dynamic changes China is going through as it becomes a world economic leader," Salvendy said. "The premier and I spoke about how industrial engineering can contribute to furthering the economic revitalization of China."

Salvendy is an international leader in human factors and ergonomics. The field is concerned with the design, operation and management of work environments requiring interaction with humans. Numerous countries around the world have adopted Salvendy's research in the area.

He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and was the first individual elected from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society to the academy. He also is the founding editor of two scientific journals: the International Journal on Human-Computer Interaction and Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing.

Salvendy is the fourth person to receive an honorary doctorate in the 45-year history of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is the author of more than 430 scientific publications in industrial engineering, human factors and ergonomics.
