School of Veterinary Medicine to celebrate Phi Zeta research day

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicine will celebrate the 21st anniversary of Phi Zeta Research Day on April 1 with a program that examines a variety of research topics.

The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at noon in the hallways of the Lynn Hall of Veterinary Medicine with poster sessions and short presentations about current research. The day is sponsored by Purdue's Omicron chapter of Phi Zeta, the national honor society of veterinary medicine.

The celebration will kick off at 1 p.m. in Lynn Hall, Room G167. Selected graduate students and research fellows will be featured speakers, including Neetu Singh from comparative pathobiology, Jongmin Kim from clinical sciences and Kristin Hamann from the Center for Paralysis Research.

Laurent Couetil, a professor in veterinary clinical sciences and recipient of the Pfizer Animal Health Award for Research Excellence in 2007, will speak about equine asthma at 4:30 p.m.

The focus of the keynote address at 4 p.m. will be vaccination lessons from infectious diseases in chickens, including avian influenza, with a lecture from Karel Antoni Schat, a professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University.

A number of nominees for awards will be announced, including the 2008 National Phi Zeta Research Award and the Osborne Clinical Investigation Award.
