Appointments, honors and activities

Campus activities:

— Lon Kurashige, an associate professor of history and American studies and ethnicity at the University of Southern California, will present "Chester Rowell and the Mystery of Anti-Asian Racism" from 3-5 p.m. April 21 in University Hall, Room 117. Kurashige's research focuses on rethinking the history of anti-Asian movements. Rowell served as a public intellectual and political operative on issues regarding Asian exclusion from the late 1890s until his death in 1946. — University Residences is celebrating National Student Employee Appreciation Week (April 13-19) with a series of athletic tournaments at the Recreational Sports Center. From 8-10:30 p.m. Tuesday (April 15), teams will compete in dodge ball. The volleyball tournament takes place from 8-10 p.m. Wednesday (April 16), and basketball will be played from 8-10 p.m. Thursday (April 17). Participants will receive coupons for free food and discounted bowling. Faculty and staff honors:

— Susan Xioufaridou, Purdue University Continuing Education and Conferences sales coordinator, has earned the Certified Meeting Professional designation from the Convention Industry Council. Xioufaridou passed an examination on meeting management and a review of her professional qualifications to earn the designation.

— The Society of Government Meeting Professionals has recognized Purdue University Continuing Education and Conferences as Supplier of the Year. The award is based on the highest satisfaction rating on participant evaluations for a monthly meeting coordinated by Purdue.

— Richard K. Thomas, professor of theatre, sound design, and head of design and technology, was awarded the Founder's Award by the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. The award is given to organization members in recognition of outstanding and continued service to the institute. He also was inducted as a fellow of the institute, which is an honorary designation bestowed for life upon members who have made an outstanding contribution to the theater and the work of the institute.
