What Is Different Lenses?

Different Lenses is an intercultural and diversity certificate workshop series open to all Purdue students. Students can complete any of the workshops as stand-alone personal and professional development, or they can participate in all four workshops (in any order) to receive the Different Lenses completion certificate. The workshops are interactive and include games and activities. 

By completing the workshop series, students will improve their personal intercultural competency skills, become more aware of social justice and diversity issues, and be able to promote inclusivity with peers and professionals. Students will gain valuable transferable skills for professional, personal, and academic situations. 

The certificate will also enhance students’ academic and professional portfolios for careers in today’s global marketplace. Intercultural competence is an essential competency within the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, agriculture, health professions, business, education and many more. 

What to Expect at the Workshops:

Friendship beyond Borders

With over 1,000 clubs on campus, fraternities and sororities to join, along with study away and education group of students laughingabroad programs, it is easy to feel like a little fish in a big pond. How do we make friends in a constantly shifting world? This workshop considers what it means to be a close friend, making and keeping friends in a technical society, and feeling alone even when surrounded by people. Learn about friendship-making in different cultures and how gender and culture play into the experience of close friendship. The workshop incorporates games and activities that will allow you to develop friendships with people who are different from you and will inspire you to invest more in your intercultural friendships.

 Civility and Emotional Resilience in Polarized Times

We live in a time of anger and fear. Our communities, both local and global, are experiencing a wide range of volatile issues related to race, religion, and gender that demand discussion and understanding. But how can we do this while remaining civil and emotionally resilient? This interactive workshop will guide you through self-awareness exercises and challenging dialogues about real-life cross-cultural issues. You will gain useful tools and be able to identify applications for your personal, academic, and professional life. This workshop is designed for anyone wishing to be more open, interculturally competent, or comfortable with difficult dialogues. It will provide skills that are much needed in today’s world where divisiveness and polarization call for an approach based in respect, empathy and compassion.

Telling Your Cultural Story

This workshop considers storytelling principles and listening strategies. Telling stories about our own lives is an ancient way to convey values, share history, discover new perspectives and make connections with other people. Learn to use storytelling to reflect on cultural values and intercultural experiences in both speaker and listener roles. Learn to tell a story about something important that happened to you.  

 Case Study Conundrum

This workshop takes participants through real life critical incidents of conflict in the workplace and asks them to apply the Cultural Detective model to recognize underlying cultural values that may be clashing. This workshop is designed to teach how to suspend judgment and practice responses to life incidents from the participant's past, present or future career. 

Different Lenses Learning Outcomes

  1. To examine how an individual’s place in society affects experiences, values, or choices.
  2. To explore how to manage ourselves during “triggering” events
    • Identify our personal triggers and hot buttons
    • Explore the factors and “roots” which fuel our triggered reactions
    • Learn and practice strategies to manage our own triggered reactions
  1. To identify and engage with local, national, or global trends or ideologies, and analyze their impact on individual or collective decision-making.
  2. To analyze, recognize, and negotiate intersectionality through intercultural competence and social justice.
  3. To articulate ethical uses of data and other information resources to respond to global challenges, problems and questions that affect everyday life.

Participants are able to demonstrate mastery of the above skills as demonstrated by classroom debriefing of discussions, end of session surveys, and written reflection essays as analyzed through the AAC&U Intercultural Competence Rubric as adapted by Purdue University, and Symonette “Culturally Responsive Evaluation as a Resource for Helpful Help”.
