Purdue University Faculty Mentor Award

The Purdue University Faculty Mentor Award was established in 2024 jointly by the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center. This award recognizes the impactful contributions of faculty mentors to the University and the importance of faculty mentoring in the professional experience and success of faculty. This annual award is intended for faculty at the rank of associate or full professor who exemplify excellence in faculty mentoring. Recipients will have demonstrated commitment to active and responsive faculty mentorship and investment in the success and well-being of faculty at Purdue.

The Award

The Purdue University Faculty Mentor Award is bestowed at the annual Faculty Honors & Reception event on Monday, May 5, 2025. The award consists of a monetary prize of $5,000 to support the faculty mentoring activities of the recipient, as well as a Distinguished Faculty Mentor Lecture hosted by the Butler Center in the subsequent Fall semester.

Who is Eligible

Eligibility includes all current Purdue faculty (tenured, C/P, and research) at the rank of associate or full professor. Beyond the inaugural year, previous recipients of a Faculty Mentor Award are not eligible.

Nomination Instructions

Nominations are invited from all faculty members. Nominators should submit nomination packets electronically as a single PDF file to facultyaffairs@purdue.edu by Friday, February 28, 2025. The nomination packet should include the following, in order:

  1. A cover letter prepared by the nominator describing the nominee’s faculty mentoring effectiveness and impact, and addressing the following criteria:
    1. Excellence: How has the nominee demonstrated excellence in their faculty mentoring approaches and activities at Purdue?
    2. Scope: How has the nominee contributed positively to the faculty mentoring community at Purdue?
    3. Dedication: How has the nominee shown a long-term commitment to investing in the success and well-being of other faculty via mentoring?
  2. A brief mentoring statement from the nominee describing their faculty mentoring philosophy, commitment to mentoring, and accomplishments in faculty mentoring at Purdue (maximum 2 pages).
  3. One letter of support from faculty mentees who have first-hand knowledge of the nominee’s excellence in mentoring other faculty members at Purdue. The letter of support can be signed by multiple individuals. Nominations are limited to one letter of support.
  4. The nominee’s curriculum vitae.

Review Process

A review committee for the inaugural Faculty Mentor Award will be comprised of faculty appointed by the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Butler Center. The recipient of the Faculty Mentor Award will be notified by the Office of Faculty Affairs, and they will be expected to attend the Faculty Honors & Reception event on May 5, 2025.
