Materials

Birck researchers are pushing the boundaries of materials discovery or novel characterization techniques. Materials discovery efforts employ a wide array of techniques in the fields of hard, soft and 2D materials. Some examples: atomic layer deposition, molecular beam epitaxy, metal organic chemical vapor deposition, and roll-to-roll manufacturing of functional polymer films. Characterization strengths at Birck include Raman spectroscopy, thermal characterization including thermal transport measurement in thin films and thermoelectric property characterization, atomic force microscopy, XPS, optical characterization of materials properties from visible to IR and with nanometer resolution, and optical-based studies of ultrafast dynamics in novel nanoscale materials.
