2024 Jefferson Award Winner: Natasha Harris

Natasha Harris was recently awarded the Jefferson Award for her impact on Equity and Inclusion. Harris has been with Purdue University for the past twelve years. Currently, she is the Associate Director of Diversity in the College of Science. Her work focuses on fostering personal and professional growth among students and highlighting the importance of doing so among a diverse population.

Because of her passion for working with young adults, Harris has truly found her calling working with students on a college campus. “Seeing the students continue to grow, develop, and accomplish so much is truly one of the most exciting aspects of my job,” commented Harris.

Harris’ work with the Emerging Leaders Science Scholars Program truly demonstrates her commitment to promoting diversity and instilling confidence in young, underrepresented adults. This program, which Harris helped set the foundation for, is a comprehensive four-year experience designed to maximize student potential for recipients of the Emerging Leaders Scholarship. The scholars participation criteria include participation in Early Start during their first summer on campus and engagement in a high-impact educational experience each successive summer. These activities include academic coursework, study abroad, research, internships, and service learning.

Aside from the academic community, Harris is also active within the Greater Lafayette community. She is continuously sought out for speaking engagements. She recently led a workshop series on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to faculty members at Ivy Tech. Furthermore, her connection to students goes beyond the college demographic. Harris has hosted early outreach programs for Tecumseh Junior-High School. Her dedication in student success, especially in underrepresented student populations, is in the forefront of any type of event or program she coordinates.

“The community impact that is a result of our work reminds me of the power of collective actions and the profound impact individuals have when they come together. It instills in me a deep sense of gratitude for those who selflessly dedicate their time and energy to improving the lives of others and inspiring positive change in our diverse community.

Within the next few years, Harris plans to complete her Ed.D. program and continue to work with faculty and staff of different areas to make a significant contribution to the diverse needs of the student population. Additionally, she wants to provide tailored guidance and support to foster an inclusive and equitable learning environment where students can thrive academically and personally. Wherever she goes, facilitating individual success, providing an enriching educational experience, and preparing students to excel in a globalized world will always be her desired outcome of her work.
