Spotlight on Service-Learning: Alessandro Maria Selvitella

Alessandro Maria Selvitella serves as an Assistant Professor of Data Science and Applied Statistics at Purdue University Fort Wayne (PFW). Selvitella became a Service-Learning Fellow in the spring of 2021, directing his efforts toward incorporating service-learning perspectives into his course, STAT 490 – Data Science Methods in Epidemiology – COVID-19. He underscores the importance of ensuring that what we learn translates into tangible benefits for the communities we inhabit.

Mathematical theorems can help people.

Alessandro Maria Selvitella

Selvitella recognized a gap in the application of mathematical theories, observing that many mathematicians fail to extend their research beyond theoretical frameworks to address real-world challenges within their communities. He advocates for making data science both understandable and accessible to the general public, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that individuals remain well-informed.

During the COVID-19 pandemic this became particularly evident when statistical data that was intended to inform the public often led to confusion because of a lack of familiarity with graphical representations. Selvitella noticed that graphs presented by the media were frequently misinterpreted, which lead to misconceptions about causality. In response, he developed service-learning courses and initiated the Data Science and COVID-19 initiative. He was guided by the mission to learn, teach, and disseminate knowledge to contribute positively to the community and beyond.

In addition, Selvitella also established the Laboratory of Data Science (LDS) at PFW that is designed to provide big data expertise in the metropolitan area of Fort Wayne and increase data science opportunities for student and local community engagement in Northeastern Indiana. This work has led him to work on community programs and courses sponsored by local industries.

LDS focuses on student learning opportunities, high quality and innovative research, visiting programs, community programs, and engagement with the final goal of contributing to social good and solving real-word problems by means of data science and a fruitful interaction among academia, government, and industry.

Selvitella measures his success by the extent to which he can assist others. He advises individuals involved or interested in service-learning to first observe and understand the problems prevalent within their communities before devising solutions. His approach prioritizes establishing ethical practices and addressing engaging topics with equitable and inclusive methodologies. Selvitella’s dedication to bridging the gap between mathematical theory and practical application exemplifies his commitment to leveraging data science for the betterment of society. Through his service-learning initiatives and ethical approach, he strives to empower individuals and communities with the tools and knowledge needed to address pressing challenges effectively.
