In order to use Castigliano's theorem, you need to first set up the strain energy function for the rod. Consider the three sections, (1), (2) and (3), of the rod. Determine first the load carried by each sections, and from that write down the strain energy for each section, and sum these together. You can then apply Castigliano's theorem to determine the end displacement.

I am a bit confused by the hint. The hint says to fine the torque, but I do not see any torque. What should I do?
