H03 Discussion - Su24

PROBLEM STATEMENT

DISCUSSION THREAD

Hints: Start out by drawing individual FBDs of the two members of the frame. Note that member DH has loads at only two points (a two-force member).  For Part c) review the section in Chapter 3 regarding the determination of components of stress on an inclined plane.

  1. Am I finding the components of D correctly by looking at the equilibrium equations for the bar BD? From this, D would only have a component in the x-direction, correct? Would it also have a component in the y-direction?

    1. Do you mean by looking at bar HD? Since HD is a two-force member (given in the hint), the forces should act along the line joining H and D. So there will only be a component in the x-direction.

  2. Assuming HD is a two force member and the only force acting at point D is in the x direction, how can I solve for the value of Dx using bar BD? I considered using a moment around point B, but we’re not given the values of length to do that. I considered the right triangle and said that Dx would be equal to 4/3 W, but I am unsure of this approach.
