Would the normal force here only be due to weight or is P also included as part of that?
I believe both the weight and the component of P contribute to the normal force.
Both the weight and the force P should contribute to the normal force. Also, you are given that P = W.
Sonewhat off topic, but is it possible for an object like this to be in static equilibrium with only two unknowns? My intuition says it should be, but I'm having a hard time reasoning why.
In other words, if an object has all forces known except the friction force and the normal force (as in this problem), is it still possible for all three equations to sum to 0?
No, if there is no normal force or friction force, the object will move or rotate, which is an other subject called "Dynamics".
Anyone have suggestions on how to determine whether the block is in a state of impending slipping or tipping?
