The Oral English Proficiency Program (OEPP) works with University departments to support international graduate students who are, or would like to be, teaching assistants. Our services include:
- Screening prospective teaching assistants for oral English proficiency
- Certifying students for oral English proficiency
- Providing classroom communication training in English as a Second Language (ESL) for international graduate students
Purdue University benefits from the knowledge and talents of non-native-English-speaking graduate teaching assistants in many aspects of its instructional program. These persons bring an essential diversity of culture to the campus and thus enrich our total academic environment. These benefits cannot be realized, however, if there is a language barrier between instructors and students.
The University's policy on teaching assistants is not based on citizenship or resident status, but instead on the student's first language. If the student did not grow up speaking English in the home as their first language, they are required to be certified before holding a TA position that involves the direct instruction of undergraduate students.
Students should work with departmental liaisons to register and prepare for the Oral English Proficiency Test (OEPT), and, if necessary, enroll in English 620: Classroom Communication for International Graduate Students.

Purdue Language and Cultural Exchange website
Our mission is to help international students develop the academic, linguistic, and cultural competencies needed to participate in university life and to compete for graduate school and employment opportunities. To this end, we develop and deliver a range of culturally sensitive and educationally purposeful activities.
As a unit, PLaCE strives to maintain a community of practice that fosters collegiality, values innovation and creativity, and promotes the use of research-based teaching practices. PLaCE instructors have a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all are language educators committed to our students learning and success at the university. Instructors foster a mentoring relationship with students and model effective learning practices for the development of language and cultural competencies.
PLaCE Short Courses were developed for the Graduate Student population to optimize teaching and learning opportunities for busy Purdue students. Enrollment and Placement Information for Students:
• Short Courses are open to all undergraduate or graduate international students, as well as Visiting Scholars (see enrollment site for more details on the registration process).
• Short Courses are open to international students at all levels (undergraduate and graduate) but are especially popular with graduate students.
• Short Courses require no additional fees to enroll.
• Students self-select the course but are encouraged to contact the instructor or a PLaCE staff member before they enroll in a Short Course so that they find a course that is a good fit for them.
• Classes are non-credit, are not graded, and do not appear on transcripts; however, students can earn a Certificate of Completion.

Celery Bog Nature Area
This 195-acre Nature Area is less than 2 miles north of campus and easily reached by car, bicycle, or city bus. It is located at 1620 Lindberg Rd. To get there, turn left at the second stoplight past Mackey Arena and it will be on your right just past the bridge. There is no admission charge and it is open from dawn to dusk every day. The property includes 2.5 miles of mulched trails through the woods and prairie, as well as over a mile of paved trails that connects to the Purdue Campus. You may bike on the paved trail but bicycles are not allowed on the mulched trails.
Thousands of wildflowers are in bloom through the growing seasons which makes for a relaxing and enjoyable visit. Students come here to walk or run the trails, study, or just unwind. You or a group of people may want to volunteer to spread wood chips on the trails.
