Andrew Exner, a graduate research assistant in Purdue’s Motor Speech Lab, is working to help Parkinson’s patients during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Exner is leading the virtual study for participants across the country to evaluate an AI platform that can collect and automatically measure the speech skills of people with Parkinson’s disease. The need for AI platforms is increasing as the use of telepractice explodes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about challenges like never before, and labs at Purdue University are certainly no exception. Early this year, Andrew Exner, a PhD student in Purdue University Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, was working with the Purdue I-EaT Swallowing Laboratory. He was studying the motor behavior of subjects as they are coordinating speech and swallowing during social meal times. The study required subjects to be unmasked while performing tasks in the lab. When safety concerns related to COVID-19 emerged, the researched was halted, and the lab was temporarily shut down.“It was tough,” said Exner. “We had been working on this for months, and it just ended suddenly. I was not sure what the future held.”

SpeechVive Inc. announced that it is making its remote calibration software and training available free during the COVID-19 global health crisis. The software and training are available to all speech-language pathologists and their patients, as well as Veterans Affairs medical centers and veterans with Parkinson’s disease.

Brianna Kiefer presented a podium talk on one of her preliminary projects at the Biennial Conference on Motor Speech in Santa Barbara, CA on February 21, 2020. The title of her talk was “Efficacy of a home-based treatment paradigm, EMST and SpeechVive, to improve communication in Parkinson disease.” Her presentation was very well received with lots of great questions!
