Purdue HTM student builds leadership, collaboration through student organizations

Written By: Faith Kim

Growing up, I deeply cared about others, but I didn’t know how I was going to apply that as a future career. Being from out of state, I was intimidated to attend such a large university where I didn’t know many people. After touring the White Lodging-J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Tourism Management in Purdue’s College of Health and Human Sciences, I knew this was the right place for me. I felt welcomed by the students and faculty. I was inspired by the students’ eagerness to share their experiences and was amazed by their diverse ideas and visions for how they can change the future of hospitality.

It wasn’t until I began to join student organizations that I really found my fit at Purdue. These student-led groups empower hands-on experiences in our school and respective industries. Clubs such as HTM Society and its signature Black Tie Dinner event and the Professional Convention Management Association pushed me to be a more confident leader and collaborate with others. In these organizations, I found my passion for becoming an event planner where I can create memorable experiences that last a lifetime.

The school attracts students who genuinely care for people and are innovative in providing exceptional service. The faculty provided me with one of the greatest support systems in my personal and professional endeavors. They truly care about my long-term goals and how they can equip me with the tools for success.
