Purdue University’s chapter of Exercise is Medicine on Campus, housed within the Department of Health and Kinesiology, has earned gold-level recognition from the American College of Sports Medicine.
Under the direction of Cassandra Ledman, clinical associate professor of health and kinesiology in the College of Health and Human Sciences, the Purdue chapter of Exercise is Medicine on Campus has expanded its engagement and collaboration during the past couple of years through events, promotions and activities on campus.
Purdue’s Exercise is Medicine on Campus program aims to promote physical activity through a variety of activities, such as a biweekly walking group, the annual Boiler Nation walking challenge, Exercise is Medicine on Campus Week activities in the fall and spring, family-oriented booths at Purdue events, and more.
In addition to these campus activities, the group offers educational opportunities for the campus and surrounding community, including the HK 41500 (Exercise as Medicine) class for Purdue students and a seminar series in the A.H. Ismail Center for Preventive and Lifestyle Medicine.
The Purdue chapter of Exercise is Medicine on Campus also partnered with Dr. Craig Nadelson and his patient care team in the Purdue University Student Health Center to integrate the Physical Activity Vital Sign resource into student health. This resource has been included in all non-sick visits to the center, delivering information and referral options alongside students’ visit summary notes to increase their awareness on the value of living physically active lifestyles.
From here, the group hopes to continue building collaborations across campus and further increase awareness and education about the impact of physical activity on health for Purdue students, faculty and staff.
