Purdue Landscape Architecture Students pitch parklets designs to local downtown business owners.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Purdue students are pitching ideas to local business owners that could tweak the layout of Downtown Lafayette.

Seventeen students were at MatchBOX Coworking Studio Thursday to show off their parklets designs to a half dozen business. Parklets are miniature parks about the size of a few parking spaces. Each parklet is designed to compliment a business and its theme.

Purdue assistant professor Mindy Appold said they are a way to bring activity to the streets.

“People want to be with people. If they can see people enjoying themselves on the street, this is a great way to bring energy to the city,” said Appold.

The parklets are temporary and can be built and taken down at any time.

Appold said this project is a great way for her students to develop real world experiences in their field. She said she expects at least three of these designs to actually be constructed in the near future.
