HLA Members Presented at Indiana Small Farm Conference

HLA was well-represented at the Indiana Small Farm Conference this year.

Petrus Langenhoven presented a session during the Resilient Ag track titled “Impact of Soil Fertility Amendments and Cover Cropping on Soil Health” with Nathan Shoaf.

Chris Adair presented a session during the Vegetables track titled “Efficiency Hacks Part II” alongside Roger and Mary Winstead of Beautiful Edibles. Chris also presented demonstrations of the student farm’s bin washer.

John Orick was a roundtable presenter alongside Amanda Bradshaw-Burks (Urban Ag Educator, Purdue Extension Vanderburgh County) and Carey Grable (Horticulture Educator, Purdue Extension Marion County) during the “Volunteer Management Roundtable,” in the Urban Ag track.

Ashley Adair facilitated a panel discussion on “Certification Transitions – Organic and More” during the Resilient Ag track. Dan Perkins of Perkins Good Earth Farm, Wendy Carpenter of Christopher Farm, Jordan Bohall of Birdie & the Bees Farm, and Rachel Beyer and Jonas Carpenter of Mavourneen Farm all participated in the panel.

Karen Mitchell and Steve Meyers represented HLA at the trade show, interacting with many participants over the course of the two day conference.

Barrett Wilson presented a poster about the Freight Farms containers during the poster session. Petrus Langenhoven (co-author Sofia Catucuamba) presented a poster on market demand for specialty peppers in the US while Moriah Bilenky presented a poster on her NCSARE Partnership Grant. Several graduate students presented posters as well, including Moyeed Talukder (edamame trial) and Celia Corado (black soldier fly compost tea for weed management). Visiting scholar Hannah Robalino presented a poster on Bilenky Lab’s Organic Center Grant.

Miranda Purcell, Moriah Bilenky, Petrus, and Chris hosted discussion tables at the Networking Luncheon on Wednesday, hosted by the Small Farm Conference Community Building team  [Ashley Adair and Beckie Lies (Community Wellness Coordinator, Purdue Extension St. Joseph County)].
