Grad student’s project helps African nation

Mary Schott’s heart and mind are with the people of Kigoma, Tanzania, which is about 8,400 miles from her hometown of Attica.

The
48-year-old Purdue University graduate student started the Trees for
Tanzania reforestation project two years ago in an effort to help the
southeast African nation. When she was a child, she accompanied her
father on a mission trip to Zaire, now called the Republic of Congo.

“I
fell in love with Africa,” she said. “I worked in forestry for 10 years
and figured out that deforestation is a big problem in Africa
