Purdue provides all benefits-eligible employees a basic $15,000 accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) benefit. Employees have the opportunity to elect additional AD&D coverage as a new employee and each year during benefits open enrollment.
AD&D provides protection against losses due to accidental death and dismemberment. The plan covers accidents on a 24-hour basis, regardless of whether the accident happens while on the job or off the job.
The chart below illustrates the benefits payable under Basic AD&D and Additional AD&D for a covered loss.

More detail
Benefits are payable as long as the loss occurs within 365 days after the date of the accident. A benefit is provided if you sustain a traumatic brain injury as a result of and within 60 days of a covered accidental injury. The brain injury must be diagnosed by a physician and have lasted a minimum of 12 consecutive months.
You will receive the proceeds of any benefits payable due to the death or dismemberment of any covered dependent, as well as from any dismemberment you experience.
Proceeds resulting from your death are payable in any manner you specify in your beneficiary designation. Log into Benefitfocus at any time to record or change your beneficiaries.
Additional provisions
This section briefly outlines several additional benefits payable under the Basic AD&D and Additional AD&D coverage. More detailed policy information is available from Staff Benefits.
NOTE: "Insured dependent" and "insured spouse" refer to a dependent who has AD&D coverage in effect at the time of the accident.
Coma
In the event you or an insured dependent becomes comatose as a result of a covered accidental injury, additional monthly benefits may be payable if the individual:
- Becomes comatose within 365 days from the date of the accident, and
- Is continuously comatose for a minimum of 31 days.
The total amount paid will not exceed the base amount of coverage
Exposure or Disappearance
Benefits will be payable according to the benefit payment schedule for losses resulting from unavoidable exposure to the elements. Additionally, benefits will be payable for loss of life when the insured individual’s body has not been found after one year.
Tuition Reimbursement for Dependent Spouse
In the event of your death, additional benefits are available to assist with tuition for a licensed professional trade school training program for your insured spouse if he or she:
- Has enrolled in classes within 30 months of the employee’s accidental death, and
- Has enrolled to obtain an independent source of support and maintenance.
Expenses must be for tuition or the cost of training materials.
Tuition Reimbursement for Dependent Child(ren)
In the event of your death, additional benefits are available to assist with tuition for higher education for each insured dependent child for up to four years, but not beyond the date the child attains age 24. A $1,000 benefit is payable if you have no dependent child.
Day Care for Dependent Child
In the event of your death, additional benefits are available to assist with dependent day care expenses for insured dependents under the age of 7 years. The insured dependent must have been enrolled in a licensed day care facility on the date of the insured parent’s death or must enroll in a licensed day care facility within 90 days following the date of death. A $1,000 benefit is payable if you have no dependent child.
Felonious Assault
If you experience a loss as a result of a felonious assault, your benefit payment for the loss will be increased by five percent.
Return of Remains
This additional benefit for return of remains only applies if the covered person suffers a loss of life while outside a 150-mile radius of the person’s home. Covered expenses include expenses for embalming, cremation, coffin, and transportation of remains.
Critical Period Payment
In the event of your death, your insured spouse (covered under you as an employee) will be entitled to an additional monthly benefit during the first 12 months following your death.
Common Accident
If you and your insured spouse both suffer a loss of life as a result of the same accident, an additional benefit is payable. The amount payable is the difference between the amount of coverage on the employee and the amount of coverage on the dependent spouse.
For example, if you are covered for $250,000 and your spouse is covered for $100,000, your spouse’s benefit will be increased by $150,000, bringing it to $250,000.
Dependent Child’s Covered Loss
If your dependent child suffers a covered loss, other than loss of life, the amount payable on behalf of the insured child will be doubled.
