March 18 ALCoP: What student engagement to support learning looks like now, future

One of the challenges facing instructors and students during the pandemic is how to help students engage in their academic life in ways that support their learning. The March 18 meeting of Purdue’s Active Learning Community of Practice (ALCoP) will explore this topic from both student and instructor perspectives.

Feedback from students says they want to be engaged in their course work, and they offer suggestions that will help those connections. These will be shared during this ALCoP session.

But what does student engagement look like to instructors? Even before the pandemic, physically seeing students in a classroom was no guarantee each person was engaged. Introducing active learning (AL) strategies into AL classrooms helped, but the assumptions of physical presence and engagement is now more complicated. So, what might student engagement look like virtually?

Staff and instructors from Purdue West Lafayette are welcome to join in this discussion on March 18, 2-3 p.m., by registering for access to the WebEx meeting. Registration for the Tuesday, April 13, session of ALCoP is also open. Questions regarding ALCoP or other resources for instructors may be emailed to InnovativeLearningTeam@Purdue.edu.

The Active Learning Community of Practice is a program of Innovative Learning, Purdue West Lafayette’s hub approach to connect instructors to the resources they need to engage students, develop courses in any instructional modality, and enhance learning across the University. Members include the Center for Instructional Excellence, Libraries and the School of Information Studies, Purdue Online and Teaching and Learning Technologies.
