Brightspace, Exam Prep, Accessibility Highlight Upcoming Workshops for November

The Innovative Learning Team at West Lafayette, the Office of Instructional Technology at Purdue Northwest, and the Purdue Fort Wayne Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT) have a full slate of November workshops to help faculty prepare for the end of the Fall semester and the start of the Spring semester, highlighted by sessions on Brightspace, accessibility and exam tools like Examity and Gradescope.

Purdue West Lafayette

At West Lafayette, the month leads off with a pair of accessibility workshops offered by West Lafayette: Engaging Students with Accessible Social Media, on November 4th from 2:00-3:00 pm, and Student-Centered Classroom Accessibility, on November 5th from 10:00-11:00 am. Student-Centered to Classroom Accessibility covers the essentials of ensuring that your course meets accessibility standards and reducing barriers for students with disability, while Accessible Social Media covers the basics of how to create accessible content on tools like Facebook, Twitter, and GroupMe. These workshops also mark the last workshops led by Dean Brusnighan, who will be retiring at the end of the semester after spending the last 25 years as one of Purdue’s most vocal accessibility advocates.

Exams also take center stage this month at West Lafayette.

On November 10th from 3:15-3:45 pm, Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT) and the Center for Instructional Excellence (CIE) will partner for a Deep Dive on the Brightspace Quiz tool. This workshop will provide a closer look at the exam building and grading features available in the Quiz tool inside Brightspace, as well as some guidance for thinking about building and delivering exams.

On November 17th from 2:00-3:00 pm, join TLT for a closer look at Examity. This workshop will provide an in-depth look at Purdue’s new digital proctoring tool, Examity, and walk through the setup process for proctored exams.

Finally, on November 18th from 2:00-3:00 PM, learn more about how to offer Online Exams with Gradescope. This workshop will explore Gradescope’s new online exam tool, which allows instructors to host exams with a timer inside the Gradescope application.

TLT will also continue to offer their Brightspace Drop-In Help Sessions. For information on connecting to those sessions, or to see all workshops being offered, you can check the Purdue West Lafayette Training Calendar.

Purdue Northwest

At Purdue Northwest, the focus for November is on direct support. PNW faculty can sign up for a one hour time slot to receive personalized assistance with the course grade center organization and final grade columns. These sessions will run every Monday and Tuesday from 8:00 -9:00 am, and Wednesday and Thursday from 1:00-2:00 pm CDT and take place in The OIT Virtual Help Desk Zoom. Grade Center Office Hours begin on Monday, November 1st and run until Thursday December 17th.

PNW also will continue their popular The Expert is In! sessions in November. These drop-in sessions include a brief demonstration and are followed by open question and answer sessions from participants in the OIT Virtual Help Desk Zoom. Live Caption Tools in Zoom will be the focus for sessions on Tuesday, November 3rd from 9:00-10:00 am and Wednesday, November 11th from 2:00-3:00 pm CDT.

Finally, you can prepare yourself for Spring in Brightspace by attending a workshop Thursday November 19th from 1:00-2:00 pm and Monday November 20th from 10:00-11:00 am CDT. Visit the PNW Training calendar or the OIT Website for more information or email oit@pnw.edu with questions.

Purdue Fort Wayne

At Purdue Fort Wayne, Brightspace will be the focus for many of the month’s workshops, starting with, How to Transfer Quizzes from Documents into Brightspace on November 4th, from 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm. This hands-on workshop will help Fort Wayne faculty learn about two tools, Brightspace Quiz Converter and Respondus 4.0, to convert and transfer your quiz questions from documents to Brightspace. We recommend that faculty come with a set of quiz questions and download Respondus 4.0 prior to the workshop.

Brightspace Course Navigation and Organization will be held November 9th, from 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm. This session will provide an overview of the Brightspace content area. The facilitators will share organizational strategies for your learning materials and activities that support student learning.

Finally, PFW will end the month with Brightspace Rubric Basics on the 18th from 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm. During this one hour session, faculty will learn the basics of the Brightspace rubrics tool and how they can use it to support student learning.
