Faculty reading groups begin Feb. 17, reading From Equity Talk to Equity Walk

The Teaching Academy and the Center for Instructional Excellence invite Purdue West Lafayette instructors to sign up by Mon., Jan. 31, to join the PWL faculty teaching and learning reading groups starting Thurs., Feb. 17. These reading groups bring together instructors from around the campus in small groups to discuss how recent books about the classroom and teaching and learning may inform what they do.

For the spring 2022 semester, participants will read Tia Brown McNair, Estela Mara Bensimon, and Lindsey Malcom-Piqueux’s From Equity Talk to Equity Walk: Expanding Practitioner Knowledge for Racial Justice in Higher Education. The authors draw on a wide range of campus-based research projects to explore ways to promote change at multiple levels to achieve equity-oriented educational goals. To do this, they blend numerous case studies with detailed discussions of ways to use data effectively to understand and advance excellence throughout an institution.

Participants will read the book over three meetings throughout the semester to discuss the ideas, theories, and application for spring semester and in the future.

Participants can choose to meeting in-person on Thursdays, 2-3:30 p.m., or virtually on Fridays from 12 noon-1:30 p.m., on the following dates:

Thursdays: February 17, March 24, and April 21

Fridays: February 18, March 25, and April 22

Instructors who would like to participate during spring 2022 should fill out an online questionnaire by Jan. 26 providing information about themselves and their availability.

Those who cannot make it this semester but are interested in faculty reading and learning communities, or who have suggestions for future books/topics, may contact Dan Guberman at dguberma@purdue.edu.
