STORYLINE
Williams says that ostracism is when someone is ignored or excluded, and that it is important to recognize the pain that ostracism causes because it is underestimated. Research shows that ostracism isn’t simply the absence of positive reinforcement but is measurably painful. People who are isolated and excluded by others become less productive, feel more unworthy and are depressed more often. During the pandemic, Williams says that lack of physical contact with others can lead to loneliness and feelings of being disconnected. Social media is often used as a replacement but comes with its own downsides.
