Preventing falls in winter weather – new video uploaded to AP Video Hub

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —

A video featuring Shirley Rietdyk, a professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Purdue University, has been uploaded to the AP Video Hub.

In the video, she explains the risks associated with falling and describes the precautions people should take to prevent falls as winter weather spreads, with snowstorms hitting areas that traditionally may have only received a minor dusting. All videos in the Campus Insights series are free for download and use by all AP members and can be found at apvideohub.ap.org or by doing a general search on the Associated Press site. AP members may use the video or to pull quotes for print article or for broadcast or podcast.

STORYLINE

1 out of every 5 falls result in serious injury, such as a broken limb or traumatic brain injury. Rietdyk goes over the environmental and personal risk factors that can lead to people falling. Most falls occur thanks to a combination of risk factors.
