A video featuring Santiago Torres-Arias, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University, has been uploaded to the AP Video Hub.

In the video, he explains the impact cyber warfare can have in modern conflicts. All videos in the Campus Insights series are free for download and use by all AP members and can be found at apvideohub.ap.org or by doing a general search on the Associated Press site. AP members may use the video or to pull quotes for print article or for broadcast or podcast.

STORYLINE

Torres-Arias says that there is a cyber front in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both armies are engaging in ways to disrupt each other and collect sensitive information. When a computer virus is deployed, it can be targeted toward an individual system or could be focused on causing general disruption. Cyberattacks can be used to disable missile systems and other physical defenses. Technologically advanced nations that rely on the internet for their critical infrastructure are especially susceptible to cyberattacks. “Hacktivist” groups such as Anonymous can have an impact on the outcome of international conflicts. Torres-Arias says that part of what makes computers so powerful is that they can grant organizations like this broad capabilities. A small group of people can have a large impact on the world stage through cyber warfare.
