Circle City celebrates inauguration of Purdue University in Indianapolis

Purdue University celebrated its new urban extension in Indianapolis on Thursday (June 27), formally inaugurating Purdue University in Indianapolis. In front of a sizable crowd on Monument Circle, Purdue President Mung Chiang dedicated the new Indianapolis campus, just days ahead of its official launch on July 1.

New twists on tornadoes: Earth scientist studies why U.S. has so many tornadoes

Across the Midwest during the warmer months, studying the sky for signs of storms and tornadoes becomes one of the most popular pastimes. Dan Chavas, an associate professor in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at Purdue University’s College of Science, takes it further: All day every day, he studies what makes tornadoes tick. Working at the intersection of climate science and meteorology, he looks at the big picture of what causes severe storms and tornadoes — and what dictates where they occur.

Purdue and leading microelectronics industry association SEMI partner to bolster semiconductor education

Purdue University is partnering with SEMI, the leading global microelectronics industry association, to create online courses aimed at bolstering the semiconductor workforce. The association’s SEMI University (SEMI U) online learning platform is tailored for the global semiconductor and electronics industry, offering over 700 courses in multiple languages and flexible formats. Under the memorandum of understanding between the partners, expert Purdue faculty will develop online courses to be available through SEMI U, and Purdue will issue digital badges certifying that learners have completed a course and gained the related knowledge and skills.

Purdue leading $6M DOE-sponsored research for small modular reactor and advanced reactor technologies

Purdue University’s long-standing leadership in nuclear energy technologies research has resulted in a $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to lead a consortium that will revitalize nuclear research facilities and expand university-led research for small modular reactor and advanced reactor technologies. The group consists of five universities and colleges and two national labs, which will work to upgrade research facilities, increase their capabilities and develop programs to educate the future nuclear energy workforce.
