Purdue Galleries to open new fall exhibits

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –Purdue University Galleries on Oct 27 and 28 will open two new exhibitions based upon heritage and memory.
“What Will You Remember When I’m Gone” will be presented from Oct. 27 through Dec. 6 in the Robert L. Ringel Gallery in Stewart Center.
Charles Pansirna was the go-to photographer in Chicago’s Lithuanian community between 1916 and 1953. His portraits of weddings, babies, and funerals were the pride of immigrants building a life in America. Decidedly, these photos were taken for remembrance, but what is it that we recall? In order to answer that question, this exhibition examines a cross-section of the more than 1,500 Pansirna photos housed at Purdue Galleries.
Two contemporary photographers will show their work as a compliment and counterpoint to the narrative of pride and tradition. Owen Mundy examines his “military family tree” through its military portraits, revealing the construction of military family imagery. Min Kim Park’s postmodern mother-daughter portraits question how much traditional portraiture leaves off the record.
Packets of cards of several Pansirna images will be available in the gallery while supplies last.
From 5:30-7 p.m. Nov. 6, Purdue Galleries will host “Developing the Photo’s Memory,” a gallery talk by curator Rosanne Altstatt, with reception to follow in the Ringel gallery.

“Quilt National ‘13” will be presented from Oct. 28 through Dec. 6 in the Fountain Gallery in downtown Lafayette.
Quilt National is a biennial juried competition dedicated to the promotion of the contemporary art quilt. The exhibit is produced and circulated by The Dairy Barn Arts Center, Athens, Ohio. The works display a reverence for the lessons taught by the makers of the heritage quilts. But it is a showcase for new work, with a focus on providing the viewer with innovative trends in the medium of layered and stitched fabric and expanding the boundaries of traditional quiltmaking by utilizing the newest materials and technologies.
Quilt National is being presented in collaboration with the Center for Families at Purdue University, in celebration of its 20th anniversary.
From 5:30-7 p.m. Nov. 13, Purdue Galleries will host a reception in the Fountain gallery, featuring music by James Moon and the Third Floor Invention.
On Nov. 5, Purdue Galleries will present its annual Art Teacher Professional Day. Each year, the Purdue Galleries invites art teachers in regional K-12 programs for a daylong session describing the upcoming year of exhibitions and events, renewing friendships, and networking with other art educators.
This year’s Teacher Day will be presented at both the new Fountain Gallery in downtown Lafayette and on the Purdue campus. Transportation has been arranged to get participants to and from campus. Continental breakfast and parking vouchers will be provided for all Teacher Day participants. Certificates of participation (Professional Growth Plan points toward license renewal) will be available for anyone interested. The Robert L. Ringel Gallery is located in Stewart Center on Purdue’s main campus. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and until 8 p.m. on Thursday.
The Fountain Gallery is located at 330 Main Street, Lafayette, in the historic Perrin Building. The gallery is open noon to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. All Purdue Galleries exhibitions and events are free and open to the public.
