Appointments, honors and activities
• Appointments and promotions:
- John Gipson has been named director of summer session, effective June 12. Gipson comes to summer programming from the College of Health and Human sciences where he served as recruitment specialist/coordinator since July 2014. Gipson reports to Jon Harbor, associate vice provost for teaching and learning. In his new position, Gipson has primary responsibility for the overall leadership of summer session, the potential creation of a new winter session pilot, and specific responsibility for summer session academic program development, financial and budget planning and marketing.
- Linda Gregory has been named director of exploratory studies, effective July 1. Linda has served as interim director since November 2016, following the retirement of Sue Aufderheide. Prior to her appointment as interim director, Gregory served as associate director of exploratory studies from May 2016 until her appointment as interim director. She will report to Jon Harbor, associate vice provost for teaching and learning. Gregory will be responsible for the strategic direction of exploratory studies as well as the implementation of its programs and services. She will provide expertise and mentor staff as a campus leader who advocates for the needs of the exploratory population.
• Faculty and staff honors:
- Dimitrios Peroulis, a professor of electrical and computer engineering and deputy director of the Birck Nanotechnology Center, will participate in the U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium on Sept. 25-27 in East Hartford, Connecticut. The event is for young engineers who are performing exceptional engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines. Participants are nominated by fellow engineers or organizations. The event covers developments in four areas: Mega-Tall Buildings and Other Future Places of Work, Unraveling the Complexity of the Brain, Energy Strategies to Power Our Future, and Machines That Teach Themselves.
- Mitch Warren, director of the Office of Admissions, was elected as a College Board regional representative to the Guidance and Admission Assembly Council. His term will begin on Nov. 1 and be completed on Oct. 31, 2020. College Board is a nonprofit organization created to expand access to higher education. The membership association is composed of 6,000 of the world’s leading educational institutions.
