Dance company presents spring concert

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Contemporary Dance Company on April 28-29 will present its Spring Works Dance Concert.

The dance company, which is housed in the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts, will present six new selected works by dance faculty and student artists. All the dances use original sound created by visual and performing arts’ sound design students.

There will be a 7:30 p.m. performance each evening along with a 2 p.m. matinee April 29. The performances will be presented in the Nancy T. Hansen Theatre in the Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts. Tickets are $14 for adults, $11 for students and $7 for children 12 and under. The dances are:

* “Sphere of Blue,” created by faculty member Sally Wallace, explores a poetic expression of earth.

* “State of Affairs,” choreographed by faculty member Carol Cunningham-Sigman, is a lighthearted dance work that depicts the breakdown of formalities between individuals in a prescribed social setting.

* “12ft Drowned,” by faculty member Kathleen Hickey, explores how gestures and breath can inform movement patterns and relationships

* “Counteraction,” choreographed by faculty member Renee Murray, explores the nuances, dynamics and ever-changing relationships within a competitive world.

* “Unlocking Energy,” by faculty member Mary Beth Van Dyke, explores dynamic shifts in energy between dancers.

* “block 3100,” by senior Sibonginkosi Ncube, explores the individual and group reactions following impactful societal events.
