Hemp field day to help producers learn best practices
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Crop Diagnostic Training and Research Center (DTC) and the Midwest Hemp Council are co-hosting a hemp field day on Friday (July 19) at Meigs Purdue Ag Center, 9101 S. 100 E., in Lafayette, Indiana. Marguerite Bolt, Purdue Extension’s first hemp production specialist, Bob Waltz, Indiana state chemist and seed commissioner, Janna Beckerman, Extension plant pathologist, and Fred Whitford of the Purdue Pesticide Programs, will lead sessions for prospective hemp growers, educators and anyone interested in learning more about hemp production and research. The half-day program will repeat with the first session starting at 8:15 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. There is a $30 fee for attendees.
Topics covered in each session include:
- Licensing and regulations around hemp.
- Processing and marketing.
- Planting and harvesting hemp.
- Hemp agronomic practices.
- Pest management.
“There is a lot of excitement surrounding hemp and we want to use this field day as a way to talk about both the positive and negative aspects of hemp production, including some of the issues that can arise in an unfavorable growing season,” Bolt said.
Media are welcome to attend the public event and will not be required to pay to attend. There will be time for questions at each session.
