World Food Prize winner to speak at Purdue commencement

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Gebisa Ejeta, 2009 World Food Prize winner and distinguished professor of agronomy at Purdue, will be the featured commencement speaker at the university's commencement ceremony at 8 p.m. May 14 in Elliott Hall of Music.

President France A. Córdova will speak at the other three West Lafayette commencements -- at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. May 15, and at 9:30 a.m. May 16 -- at the same venue.

Ejeta will be speaking at the ceremony for graduates of the colleges of Agriculture; Consumer and Family Sciences; and Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences. The colleges of Education and Engineering and the School of Veterinary Medicine will have their ceremony on the morning of May 15, while the Krannert School of Management and the College of Technology will have their ceremony that afternoon. The colleges of Science and Liberal Arts will have their ceremony May 16.

Doors open 90 minutes prior to each ceremony. The procession will begin 30 minutes before the ceremony, which will last approximately two hours.

Tickets are required for admission. Graduating students will receive a packet that includes a card that can be turned in at the Elliott Hall box office for four tickets.

At the other Purdue campuses, Córdova, IPFW Chancellor Michael Wartell and Indiana University President Michael McRobbie will speak at the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne commencement at 7 p.m. May 12 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

 Córdova,  Purdue Calumet Chancellor Howard Cohen and Harvey Abramowitz, professor of mechanical engineering, will speak at the Calumet commencement at 1:30 p.m. (CDT) May 16 at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville. Abramowitz will be speaking as the recipient of the 2008-09 Outstanding Faculty Service Award.

Purdue North Central Chancellor James Dworkin will speak at PNC's commencement at 7 p.m. (CDT) May 17 at the Valparaiso University Athletics Recreation Center.

At the West Lafayette ceremonies, two large video screens above the stage will show a close-up image of the graduates as they receive their diplomas. The event will be aired live on Comcast Channel 5 and Boiler TV. It also will be shown live via webcast at mms://video.dis.purdue.edu/graduation

Windows Media Player, which can be downloaded for free, is required for viewing the webcast.

Commencement videos will be available at $30 per DVD. Order forms can be obtained at the Loeb Playhouse Box Office, online at https://www.purdue.edu/registrar/pdf/DVD_Form.pdf  or by calling 765-494-3933. Forms may be submitted both before and after the ceremony within two weeks of the event.
