As chair of the Purdue University Board of Trustees the last 10 years, Michael Berghoff provided indispensable governance in leading the university through unprecedented growth and success. Berghoff presided over his final board meeting today, concluding more than 15 years of service since his appointment as a trustee on July 1, 2009. Berghoff announced his retirement at the board’s October meeting.
Jim Bullard, the Dr. Samuel R. Allen Dean of the Mitch Daniels School of Business, provided an update to the Purdue University Board of Trustees today. Bullard reinforced that the Daniels School is prioritized on five foundational pillars: academic prowess, integration of STEM and business, transformational student experience, free market and capitalism, and powered by business partnerships.
To address growing enrollment demand, Purdue trustees approved plans for construction of a 150-bed residence hall at Purdue University Northwest and an expanded lease for another 272 beds at Purdue University in Indianapolis.

Purdue University’s Board of Trustees approved today the metrics on which President Mung Chiang’s performance will be measured for the 2024-25 fiscal year. Continuing the practice that started with President Emeritus Mitch Daniels, a significant portion of the Purdue president’s compensation is at risk and scored in a detailed manner each year.
In his report to the Board of Trustees, President Mung Chiang acknowledged faculty who received major awards from August through November and thanked friends of the university for their recent generous contributions. Chiang also recognized retiring board chair Michael Berghoff and Frank Dooley, who is stepping down as Purdue Global chancellor. He offered his gratitude to the entire Purdue community for a memorable year.
In his presentation to the Purdue University Board of Trustees, Supriyo Datta, the Duncan Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, explained how modern smartphones are powered by billions of nanoscale transistors, each of which is only a few hundred atoms across and requires quantum mechanical models for their analysis and design. He also briefly highlighted one of the primary challenges facing modern electronics, namely the need to reduce the energy cost of computation. Datta is a member of both the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Sciences.
During the Purdue Global Board of Trustees meeting today, Purdue Global leadership reported on rates for first-term persistence, first-year retention, graduation by cohort year and credentials awarded. Purdue Global Chancellor Frank Dooley said 12,070 credentials (certificates, associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees) were awarded in fiscal year 2024, marking steady increases year over year, with over 72,000 graduates since opening in 2018. The board extended appreciation to Dooley for serving Purdue Global as chancellor since 2020. The board welcomed Jon Harbor, who will serve as interim chancellor beginning Jan. 1, 2025, and Kati Pratt, who serves as chief marketing officer.
