Growing up in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, Jhacolby Williams begged his mom for a dog. She offered her son a deal: If he could take care of a plant, she would agree to a dog. Her creative parenting instead fostered his love of plants. And today, Williams is pursuing a master’s degree in agronomy under Purdue professor Shalamar Armstrong. Williams hopes to advance a technology for farmers to have a more accurate depiction of their soil composition, limiting the excess fertilizer so prevalent in agriculture.
As a Purdue associate professor of STEM education research in Indianapolis, Brandon Sorge focuses on building a more diverse STEM workforce as well as a populous that is more civically minded and ethical. His research in early education through adult learning uses place-based experiential learning that hopes to improve students’ environmental scientific knowledge as well as their ethical self.
Purdue has been awarded the U.S. Department of Defense’s prestigious ROTC and Educational Institution Partnership Excellence Award for 2022-23, citing the university as a “premier institution for military education and training” and Purdue’s Air Force ROTC program as a “beacon of excellence.” The annual DOD award recognizes ROTC units across the country for their accomplishments in areas such as overall program performance, educational institution support and other notable achievements.
A summit hosted by Purdue and Google brought together more than 300 leading representatives from business and industry, government and nonprofits, along with university researchers and students, to explore the evolution of artificial intelligence and its profound impacts on workforce development and education. The inaugural summit was held Nov. 14 in Indianapolis.
Registration is open for faculty to attend the Westwood Lecture Series, which will now take place on a new date, Dec. 4. This event was originally scheduled for Dec. 5. Mohit Tawarmalani, executive associate dean of faculty and the Allison and Nancy Schleicher Chair in Management in the Mitch Daniels School of Business, will present “Optimization Beyond Convexity: Applications in Process Design, Networking and Pricing” from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at Westwood, the Purdue president’s residence.
As part of International Education Week (Nov. 18-22), Purdue’s Office of Global Partnerships, along with the John Martinson Honors College, will present an international research panel featuring three esteemed faculty members. The panel is noon-1:30 p.m. Friday (Nov. 22) at the Innovation Forum in the Honors College Hall and Residences Hall North.
The latest “This Is Purdue” episode focuses on Karen Plaut, Purdue’s executive vice president for research. Plaut oversees Purdue’s expanding $600 million research enterprise, and under her leadership, researchers from across the university are working together to solve the world’s toughest challenges.
